Well, we always seem to do well first game of the season, and today was no exception. Tigers U13 faced a Madeley side who had finished 2nd bottom of the PJYL league last year, and had switched over to the SCYL in search of an easier time of it. Ah well...
JB won the toss and decided to kick uphill in the first half, against the gradient and the sun. Madeley had a lot of the early pressure and made the advantage of the hill pay as they moved into a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. A breakaway after 32 mins saw Rhys Potter break clear of the defence, and lift a sublime left footed chip over the head of the despairing keeper. 1-2 HT.
The 2nd half saw Tigers kicking downhill, and after 10 mins Potter again beat the defence to slot home his second goal of the game. This led to Madeley becoming increasingly frustrated, and there was a lengthy stoppage on the 20 minute mark following a disagreement between Josh Lavender and the opposing blonde-streaked striker which led to both players being given a talking to by their respective managers - Josh admirably kept his cool following extreme provocation.
Tigers deservedly took the lead after 26 minutes, when again Rhys Potter used his pace to destroy the opposition defence and slot a superb finish over the keepers head. He could have had a fourth soon afterwards, but slipped as he made the final approach. Madeley became more and more desperate and were denied a goalscoring opportunity when the linesman (!) raised his flag following a through ball by their left winger. Video evidence clearly showed that his team mate had been in an offside position whilst interfering with play when the ball was played.
Despite the referee losing both his yellow and red cards, and presumably also his watch, he finally blew his whistle after 8 minutes of injury time, with Tigers holding on thanks to late goal-line clearances from Adam Scragg and Jordan Batho. A fair result in the end - Tigers posed most of the attacking threats, and will look forward to their Wednesday game with Mow Cop, hoping to make it 2 out of 2.
